Volunteer

Volunteer with us! Do you like animals? Are you living or traveling in the south of Portugal? Then we would love your help! It’s not been long since we started this project and our first set of volunteers have already made an incredible difference here at Wigglestail.

At the moment we have three options for volunteering available:

1. Local volunteers based or travelling around the Algarve who are able to travel to and from the sanctuary on volunteer days. If you are living or travelling in our area and wish to stop by for even a few hours, do get in touch, even walking one dog or grooming a cat makes such a difference!

2. Campervan/motorhome/caravan area, if you are travelling in a home on wheels you will be able to camp on our property and use facilities in return for volunteering at the sanctuary.

3. Tented camping area, use our on site tent (4 man, 2 bedroom) or bring your own and camp on our land while volunteering. We have started to create a nice camping space in the orange grove of our property (separate from the sanctuary itself but on the same grounds) for people who wish to stay with us and volunteer.

Location

We are based in the hills of the Algarve, around a 15 minute drive from São Bartolomeu de Messines, with beautiful countryside walks on your doorstep. For day trips, you can reach the coast, all of these places and more within an hours drive: Albufeira, Lagoa, Benagil caves and Portimao.

Facilities

This is a new project, and as a non-profit animal organisation, our funds are tight and as such our facilities are somewhat basic, however we hope that the beautiful surroundings and helping animals make this worth it. At the moment we can provide:

  • Parking space for volunteers in camper vans or motorhomes, electric hookup can be provided
  • Tent accommodation for volunteers (4 person tent, with 2 bedrooms)
  • Space to camp for volunteers wishing to bring their own tent
  • Water supply at camping site
  • Wifi available at camping site
  • Outdoor cold shower facility
  • Simple tented camping toilet set up
  • Outdoor electric stove top and sink for cooking/washing up
  • Laundry can be done at the sanctuary
  • A sense of community within our team
  • As many animal cuddles as you can handle

What will you be doing?

We ask for a few hours of your time a day to help us with:

  • Spending time with our animals, socialising, cuddles and dog walks in beautiful surroundings
  • Helping us with projects to improve the sanctuary
  • Helping us with projects to improve the camper area for future volunteers
